Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to everyone!

We wish you peace & love over the holidays...

And a very happy new year!

Bella's grown a ton since last Christmas. She's quite the little lady now huh? Kiera and I can't believe our eyes some times.

This girl just can't wait for Christmas. She's been asking for all kinds of presents. And she has a long list of demands! 😂

"What would you like Santa to bring you, little girl?"

"Umm...Daddy Shark, Peppa Pig, Daniel Tiger..."

(Bella memorized 3 toys that she knows she wants and she loves telling everyone.)

"What's this dadda?"

This is going to be a great Christmas. I just know it!

Fall-en for you

Every so often I dust off our good camera and the three of us go outside to take some pictures.

By this time (a few weeks ago) a lot of leaves had already fallen, and it seemed like the perfect time for a stroll in the park.

CLICK.

CLICK.
Err...that one's no good. "Bella please put your tongue away"

You can't help but fall in love with these kinds of colours.

"Bella, what I did I say about that tongue?!"

A kiss from Momma.

That's Bella's way of kissing, by the way. She will lean in with her forehead to give you a kiss 😘

Time for a quick costume change...

"We need to put that coat to use somehow, because in two months it'll be too small!" says Mom.

"Alright, that's enough of the coat."

Run, Bella, run!

"And now let's take a few shots of you guys walking down the path"

"Now it's Dadda's turn..."

STOMP, STOMP, STOMP!

What a great day for pictures!

"And now wave BYE to everyone because it's time to go home!"

Not scary at all!

Just before Halloween, Bella had lots of ideas for her costume. She wanted to be Minnie Mouse, then Peppa Pig, then Skye (from Paw Patrol)...but she finally settled on being a "happy ghost" - which she claims was "not scary at all" 😂

And here she was on Halloween night - a happy little ghost!

Bella sings the ABCs

This video is from September when Bella was just learning the ABCs. She's such a little monkey!

Farewell Summer (part 2)

It's mid-November but I'm still stuck thinking about the summer with you, Belle. You flourished so much in the last six months. I can't get over it.

I'm looking through pictures of you in the backyard. Drawing with chalk on the patio...

And err...you drawing on yourself 😂

You're quite the little artist! Like any young child - you love to create, imagine and pretend.

Do you know that your dad loves to create art, too? We're one and the same in that way.

But this? This is not me, Bella! I'm not sure how you'd describe this ensemble you're wearing. Bunny ears, fairy wings and a tutu? You're out of this world. You coordinate clothes and accessories like your Momma, so you better take that up with her! 😄

What else did we get up to this summer? Well, for starters we took you on a train ride to visit dad's work. Downtown Toronto.

Pretty boring, you thought, huh?

But this isn't your typical workplace. This place is a fun zone for creative-types like your old man. Why take the elevator in life when you can just take the slide?

Whatever your passion, Arabella, you can always find a place for yourself in this world. My thing happened to be creating art and graphic design, but it doesn't have to be your thing.

The best thing you can do for yourself in life is to get passionate about something - and chase it. Go after it. Eventually you'll find that the passion will morph into something real.

So if you want to be Minnie Mouse then go ahead and be Minnie Mouse - if that's who you want to be.

We'll love you and support you through everything you're passionate about.

Our cottage trip was probably the highlight of the summer for me. At the cottage everyone enjoys the fresh air, water and sunshine - the natural beauty that the wild North has to offer here in Canada.

For a brief moment it felt like heaven. It was bliss. It was where I broke away and listened to my own thoughts.

All of this open space had me thinking. Over-analyzing, I guess you could say. And I came to the realization that I can't keep holding onto you so tightly, Bella, because you need to slowly experience things on your own.

I need to come to grips with the fact that you're not a little baby anymore, and I need to push myself to challenge you more, in order to make you stronger and more independent.

It's no secret that you had a rough start to life. It's made your mom and I a bit too over-protective, but it's something we're trying to work through daily. It's a struggle sometimes.

I'm beginning to realize that as you grow up, I need to grow with you, too. I need to adapt with you, otherwise I'm only going to stand in your way. And I don't want to be a barrier in your life, Arabella. I don't want to ever get in the way of YOU.

If anything, I want to walk alongside you, or behind you, but never in front of you. Deep down I know that you have your own path that you need to carve out, and I better get myself mentally prepared for it.

I'm beginning to get it. I'm starting to see.

If you gotta jump, then jump! The least I can do is maybe catch you, or be there to help you get back on your feet.

Bella, we're both learning so much from one another lately. In the same way I learn from my parents - and they learn from my brother and I.

We're always learning and adjusting ourselves, aren't we? We never stop. We're always rewriting what it means to be a family, what it means to love a spouse, what it means to be a parent, what it means to be a child.

Sometimes love is gained. Sometimes love is lost. Sometimes people are in our lives, and sometimes *POOF*...just like that, they're gone.

It's a crazy world we live in, don't you think? Life is so precious and fragile, but you don't realize it until something (or someone) wakes you up.

Bella, you certainly woke me up. And I'm so glad that you did.

Farewell Summer (part 1)

Arabella, it's crazy to see how fast you're growing. You were so tiny when we look back to May of this year...

We had some really sweet moments with you over the spring and summer.

It took a while for the weather to get warmed up, though. For a while it seemed like summer was never going to arrive. The term 'climate change' doesn't necessarily mean it's going to get warmer, huh? 😛

Despite the chilly spring, we made the most of it
. At the very least we'd take you to the park and let you run wild. And you would kick up dust!

ZOOM! You were obsessed with the stroller. That's all you wanted to do. "Baby! Park! Stroller!" you'd yell.

This was one of your mom's favourite pictures from spring. We all went to a wedding, which took place at a beautiful venue.

At the wedding reception you were running all over the dance floor...

And your mom and I were having a great time watching you run around and get silly.

In June it finally started to get a lot warmer...

The flowers were in full bloom, and apparently so were you!

You grew so much over the course of the summer...

When your dad was at work, your mom would take you to the park before it got too hot outside.

And if it rained, it didn't bother you one bit, because you loved going out in your rain boots. Who doesn't like jumping in puddles?

Looking back at the spring and summer, it really was special.

We went to a few farms together and you had a blast.

Naturally, you were in love with all of the animals.

Especially the horse!

But you love all animals...big and small!

Speaking of animals, the best thing we did all year was get a membership to the Toronto Zoo.

We went to the zoo constantly because there was always something to see or do there. And we live just around the corner!

Sometimes we'd go 4-5 times a week. It's like we were living at the zoo some days!

I'd come home from work, quickly eat, and then we'd all jump in the car and go to the zoo for the rest of the day.

"Zoo! Zoo!" you'd say to us. "Monkey! Owl! ZOOOO!"

We had fun on the merry-go-round...

With your cousins...

And you even got to pet certain animals like the skunk (or as you called it, "kunk") 😂

And of course, there was the zoo splash pad which cooled us off on those hot summer days.

When the heat got to be too much, we'd find ways to cool off in our little backyard.

Even the garden hose worked wonders 😂

But nothing beat going to the beach...

We're talking non-stop fun in the sand 😄

And when the beach wasn't an option, a pool was the next best thing 😃
