New year, same challenges

"Oh, hello there", says Arabella. "It's nice to see you again".

A lot has happened in the last few months...

Belle's grown bigger (although very slowly, now at 13lbs), she's gotten stronger, she's more coordinated, she started to verbally communicate, she's rolling around more, and she had her first two teeth come out...

So many wonderful milestones were celebrated lately. Mom and dad are so proud of their big girl. It's been incredible to watch her flourish.

So what's ahead for Arabella in 2018?

More developmental assistance, occupational therapist sessions, ongoing chiropractor appointments, physiotherapy, and follow-up appointments (for things like hypertension, kidneys, eyes, and lungs).

After months of planning and coordinating, Arabella finally has an entire team of specialists at her disposal. So if she ever requires services like speech therapy, for instance, it's all connected through the same program.

Hopefully in 2018 we'll finally be rid of her oxygen support. There's nothing Bella would want more, than to get rid of all the gear around her face. She simply wants to be free. She's ready to cut the chords.

And in the next month or two, we'll definitely be getting rid of her feeding tube - but it will be replaced with a different kind of tube - a gastrostomy tube (also known as a 'g-tube'). It's basically a feeding tube placed through the abdomen into the stomach. Here's the basic idea:

Since Belle refuses to bottle feed (and she can barely tolerate any kind of solid food) this surgery is absolutely necessary. It's also long overdue. The g-tube will free up her nasal passage, and relieve her throat and esophagus (from the constant irritation of the current tube). The procedure might seem unnerving to some of you, but you shouldn't worry. It's for the best, and it will help her in all kinds of ways. It's going to give her a lot more freedom, too.

Right now Arabella still throws up very frequently. She gags and retches, and eventually vomits. Sometimes it's a little bit, and sometimes it's a lot. We're constantly changing her outfits, changing her linens, or looking to grab the nearest blanket to catch her aspirates. A lot of the time the vomiting is so sudden and violent that the milk comes out of Arabella's nose. Sometimes it even gets into her lungs. It makes her cough fiercely. She often has tears in her eyes. It's not a good time for anyone, and Kiera and I are quickly reminded of where her 'feeding aversion' originated from. It's clear that for Arabella, eating causes pain.

Her current feeding tube irritates the back of her mouth and throat, and it causes her a lot of discomfort. It's likely a big reason for her throwing up, and it's why Bella doesn't want to eat very much. It's basically another thing that gets in the way of things.

She refuses the spoon, and we've been instructed not to force her with any kind of food, so we let her do everything herself. Even if she just tastes her own fingers, that should be considered a successful session. And now that Arabella has teeth coming out, we've been told to eliminate the 'hard munchable foods' (like carrots and celery), since pieces can easily break off and become a chocking hazard.

Arabella still has a lot of negative associations around her face and mouth. So hopefully with the g-tube, she can slowly begin to feel normal again...

We knew that Arabella's eating was going to be an uphill climb. At this point, we're not phased, or even worried. She's doing so well otherwise, that we have no reason to complain.

When Belle first stopped bottle-feeding, I'll admit it was a bit discouraging for Kiera and I. We felt a bit saddened because we thought we had failed as parents. But we got over that rather quickly, and we're not bothered by it anymore. In the grand scheme of things, we're lucky that she's so strong and healthy.

Stay tuned in the weeks ahead, as there will be posts for Arabella's 'one year birthday', more updates about Arabella's development, we'll look back once more to 2017, and posts about her upcoming g-tube surgery.

Video: My first word

Arabella generally doesn't say too much (she prefers to make noises), but last week she said her first word!

She's likely just babbling, but that's alright, because we'll take it! 😄  Bella was wearing her "It's my half birthday" onesie, since it finally fits her properly!

Happy 11 months

On January 17th, Arabella turned 11 months old. That's 8 months corrected! Oh, baby!

Mom took over the photographer duties while dad was at work. Later, mom emailed the photos over - and dad absolutely loves seeing pictures like these in his inbox.

In less than a month, Arabella will be celebrating her first birthday. It's hard to imagine that we're coming up to a year since our adventure began. People say that this time might be a little bittersweet - that all of those old emotions might come rushing back, but I think that's expected. It simply comes with the territory.

All in all, we're excited. One year here we come!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!!!

Well, it's true that 2017 wasn't the most perfect year for our family, but we're so thankful for all the wonderful blessings that came our way. Especially this little blessing...

Among all of the presents, she's the greatest gift of all 😃

Looking back, I think we learned a lot about ourselves this year.

We learned that we could overcome anything. We discovered a deeper love of family and friends. We learned about our own faith and the power of the human (and Holy) spirit. And we found that great rewards come to those who take great risks.

We celebrated Christmas and New Years very quietly, but we couldn't have asked for a better holiday.

"Oh, how I love the holidays!" said Arabella.

This Christmas felt very surreal, because last year around this time things started to slowly unravel. We weren't sure what was in store for us in the future...

And here we are today, happy as ever with this great bundle of joy...

I want everyone (who reads this blog) to know how much your strength and support has meant to us. We're in debt to so many of you who went out of your way to show us such kindness and generosity.

We couldn't have done this by ourselves...

This Christmas and New Year, during my quiet moments of reflection, I was thinking about how thankful I am for all of you guys, and all of the beautiful gestures that made us feel so amazing and special.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Thank you so much. All the best to you guys in this new year 💗

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas and happy holidays from our little family to yours! This holiday season, may you enjoy the greatest gift of all - the gift of love and family!

On Christmas Eve, Santa personally came to visit Arabella. She was a little skeptical at first, because he sounded awfully familiar 😄

"You've been a very brave and strong girl this year", said Santa. "Your entire family is so proud of you!"

She had a big smile on her face. And before he left, Santa dropped off lots of presents under the tree!

For mom and dad, Santa had already delivered their present a long time ago. Here's that wonderful present again in the Santa sack 😁

We've been loving this present all year long...

Much like these Christmas lights, Arabella shines and lights up our world.

The faces she makes sometimes are absolutely priceless.

I can't imagine a better gift this year. Mom and dad are truly grateful for all the blessings they've received.

And best of all, we had a lot of snow here in the Greater Toronto Area. It's going to be a white Christmas!

A white Christmas, just like the ones we used to know...

So from our family to yours, may your days be merry and bright...and may all your Christmases be white!

Happy 10 months

Arabella's excited to have turned 10 months old! We're into double-digit territory, baby!

She's certainly a happy little elf, isn't she? And Christmas is just around the corner...

She's the only present Kiera and I asked for this year...

And boy, did Santa deliver!

This is one package that was handled with extra love and care. Express shipped direct to our hearts! 💗

There's a whole lot of Christmas cheer at our house this year. And it's easy to see why...

It really is the most wonderful time of the year!

Happy 10 months Arabella!

Back to work for dad

Last week dad went back to work. Almost 10 months after Arabella's birth. It's hard to imagine that it's been so long.

It was a pretty smooth transition, though. It felt like I was back at work after a very long, long, long weekend 😄. I received a warm welcome back, and funny enough, it was the week of many Christmas parties and team events. Needless to say, not a lot of work got done!

It's the absolute perfect time to go back to work. Everyone is in a great mood, the holidays are almost here, and people are filled with the Christmas spirit as they look forward to taking time off from work.

"When are you coming home, dadda?" reads a text message from mom. "Catching the 3:43 train", I reply.

Usually I'm home around 4:30pm, and I can't wait to get through the door so I can kiss and hold Arabella. It's the best part of my day.

Leaving work early means getting up early, though, so that I can be at work a little after 7am.

It means getting up at 5am, eating a quick breakfast, warming up Bella's food, and running her feed while she sleeps (via the gravity bag). Then I get myself ready as her milk slowly drips into her tummy.

Kiera, on the other hand, has to help by taking care of the 11:30pm and 2:30am feeds - which can be very tiring since the feeds themselves can go for 45 minutes sometimes. It doesn't leave her much time for quality sleep in between, but it's the best we can do for now. Eventually we'll be able to take out the 2:30am feed, and that will mean a better night's rest for mom.

It's not easy being away from Belle during the day, but it's really not as bad as I imagined. After 6 months of hospital stays, and 4 months of being at home with her every day, I'm obviously very attached. But knowing that Kiera's home with her puts my mind at ease.
Besides, it was about time to get back to "normal".

Back to reality...

When I really think about it, I'm lucky to have gotten so much extra time away from work. I was able to focus better, support my wife during an emotional roller-coaster, and be there for my little girl when it mattered most. How many fathers out there get to have as much time as I did?

I couldn't fathom not being there for my family. And during Belle's hospital stay I noticed just how many moms were doing it by themselves, going through it alone. People are faced with different circumstances, we realized, and not everyone has the kind of support system that we do.

Here's Arabella enjoying the big bath. She has so much fun kicking and splashing the water.

Arabella's slowly growing up and becoming more aware of everything around her. She knows what she likes, and what she dislikes. For the most part she's calm and quiet, and rarely has moments of fussiness.

She smiles constantly, makes faces, and loves eye-contact and attention. If she's acting out, all she needs is someone to pick her up and hold her. She's instantly back to being calm. She's an absolute darling, and both Kiera and I are over the moon for her. She's the best 💗
